Project 3

I had a little trouble with this one. In the craft book it's a single sheet of thin gauge copper folded into a shelf. I of course decided to go with two pieces of tin. This made the whole foling it over a huge pain! so while it isn't as crisp as it could be I still think it came out rather beautiful.

flea markets are my crack

I love going to flea markets ! And i'm really lucky that the one in Raleigh NC is such a good one and close by. There is nothing that sucks the fun out of a flea market as when it's all knock off handbags and cheap imports . But as i've said the one near me is pretty good.

 I got up early Sat. morning , armed myself with a waterbottle, a roomy tote bag and some cash and went . I lucked out there were a ton of "junk" sellers . I prefer the sellers that just have boxes of stuff to go through to the artfully arranged stalls . i fell like they have more of what i want and tend to be a bit cheaper .

My absolute favorite find of the day ? the awesome blue bird brooch. i got it for 50CENTS ! I can't wait to make something out of it. i also picked up a few more tins but I haven't grabbed a picture of them .

Luna moth dream

About a moth ago i took a wax carving class . A few days after the class I woke up with a huge urge to carve a luna moth pendant . There were a few rough starts ,first i bought wax that was just too hard and then I needed to shrink down my sketch. But it's finally coming along . 

This was my rough sketched out idea . it had a huge anatomy flaw. Like the fact that his antenna are bellow his eyes . Please pardon my poor drawing skills . 

 

After i fixed the sketched and shrank it down ,I started to carve the wax. My biggest mistake ? Trying to carve a moth which is a rather 2d thing out a huge block of wax. I had to carve it down a lot.

This is the fist photo i've taken of the piece . Since then I've defined  his head ,added a lot of detail to his wings like the segments and started to hollow out the back of the piece .

 

Carving wax is a lot of fun but it's more stressful for me then sculpting with clay. I'm not used to such a subtractive method . I accidentally carved his antenna way too small so now i need to melt wax and build them back up before i carve them .  I can't decided on which metal to cast him in ,silver or bronze ?

two posts in one day.

I wanted to share some pictures of what a friend and I are working on. We're both sort of going throu a creative slump and we decided to work our way through one of my many many jewelry craft books we chose this one . I'm going to do every project even the earrings which I myself don't wear . here are the first two projects in the book .

This was the first project . I of course didn't use the same materials as the book and instead went with enameled bits that I've been making . I love the enamel gear ! I need to make a ton more .

The second project was a pair of folded metal earrings . the projects in the book are very rustic and use a lot of plain or textured coppers and silver . Since I have a ton of tin and love color I went with that. I think these came out looking like little lunch bags .

a little update and a blog give away

I haven't gotten enough interest in the round robing so I'm going to hold off for now.  I'm still enameling beads and etching metal.

 When my creativity is low or blocked i try to make components for future projects. Sometimes this works and sort of jump starts my creativity . but lately it hasn't,so a friend of mine and I are going to work our way through some of my many jewelry books. So far that seems to be helping .

did i mention i got the correct torch head ? When it comes to enameling it makes the world of difference . Just look at these pretties !

In the intrest of stimulating creativity

 I would like to host a charm swap kinda . Here's how it'll work  everyone will make a link for a necklace ,and depending on the number of players thats how many you make . The pieces get mailed here where i'll make up little kit and mail the kits back to each player . Then we all make a necklace from out links ! It doesn't have to be super fancy but I think it'll stretch out creativity .

Playing with fire

I mentioned in the previous post I've started to play with torch firing enamel beads  It's a lot of fun and colors are just gorgeous.  Even when you're impatient and try doing it with the wrong torch head . These are an example of what happens to the enamel colors when you have the wrong torch head .

Would you believe the browns in the middle are supposed to be pinks ? crazy. But still had a great time making these beads .

 After a huge ordeal where i ordered the torch head from Amazon and somehow used a long since expired card ,and the emails went to junk folder , I finally got my torch head . I got it for ten bucks cheaper too ! I used the 40% off one item coupon from Hobby Lobby. Now i can actually see the colors I'm using .

 

these two sets are my absolute favorites  , I think i'm going to make a special necklace just for me with these .
