I've always been a bit fascinated by the art of scrimshaw . I rember going to various craft fairs as a kid and watching the artist work on a piece of bone. It's amazing how tiny dot and scratches can become art . I've always secretly wanted to learn.
While I was at Penland one of the Ladies in my class had on the cutest scrimshaw cupcake pendant . After begging tips on how she did it . I decided I would learn . So I bought a book and looked up tutorials on the internet.
Did you know there are even types of plastic you can use instead of bone, horn and ivory ? I was too impatient to order some so instead I dug out my very old very warped bone folder , some needles ,an exacto knife and black acrylic paint.
This is my first piece.
This weekend I'll be ordering the plastics and proper tools as this was much too much fun . Think of all the jewelry i can make !?
I even have my husband looking to get a ham bone for me so I can make a bone ring with scrimshaw all over it.
I have also started work on more goodies for the shop. Fall and the following christmas season will soon be here and i want to make sure the shop is well stocked .
